Thanks to our partnership with Groundwork Lawrence's Green Team and their community garden at Costello Park, we receive fresh produce throughout the summer and fall growing seasons. We use these items in our meals, homecooked soups, and are even able to provide our guests with a few items from the garden to take home. We also freeze extra vegetables to use throughout the winter or as food pantry items for families and individuals.
For as long as we have been open, Bread & Roses has depended on our extended family of volunteers to provide the evening meal to the many guests who visit us for each of the five evenings we are open.
Individuals are always welcome to join our volunteer crew. All volunteers must be 14 years old or older. A brief orientation is offered before signing up for a one-time or a regular volunteer commitment.
Approximately 150 volunteers help the Bread & Roses team perform a range of tasks:
- Serving the evening meal from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
- meal prepreparation
- Cleaning and organizing the facility
- Sorting donations
- Building maintenance and repairs
- Fundraisers and food drives
