Thanks to our partnership with Groundwork Lawrence's Green Team and their community garden at Costello Park, we receive fresh produce throughout the summer and fall growing seasons. We use these items in our meals, homecooked soups, and are even able to provide our guests with a few items from the garden to take home. We also freeze extra vegetables to use throughout the winter or as food pantry items for families and individuals.

Ways to Volunteer

For as long as we have been open, Bread & Roses has depended on its family of volunteers to provide the evening meal to the many guests who visit us for each of the five evenings we are open.
Individuals are always welcome to join our volunteer crew. All volunteers must be 14 years old or older. A brief orientation is offered for our volunteers before signing up for a one-time or a regular volunteer commitment.
Approximately 150 volunteers are committed to Bread & Roses and perform these and various other tasks:
  • Serving the evening meal from 4:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
  • Helping with daytime meal prep
  • Cleaning and organizing the facility
  • Sorting donations
  • Building maintenance and repairs
  • Fundraisers and food drives

Approximately 25 churches, schools, and local businesses cater meals or provide volunteer groups for Bread & Roses on a regular basis. It is one of the joys of life at Bread & Roses to see a variety of people with different beliefs and from different walks of life working together for a common goal.

Volunteer Groups

High school students are welcome to volunteer during the evening meal, accompanied by a teacher or parent, or during the day on school vacations. Several local high schools have established relationships with Bread & Roses - Central Catholic, Andover High, Notre Dame Cristo Rey, Greater Lawrence Technical School, and Phillips Academy.
Check with your school's Community Service office to find out how to get involved...

Younger students and children can contribute as well. Here are some of the ways that local schools and scouts can contribute:
• Donating baked goods
• Organizing food drives
• Participating in "cleaning days"
• Creating special cards, place mats, or table favors for our guests
